Crazy Old

IFWT_Elderly_Drinkinggrandmaak47While researching “The Gray Team,” I met numerous elder victims of crime.  Tax scams where the perp would phish for a social security number, alarming phone calls from “grand-kids” stuck in a foreign prison, door-to-door water filtration schemes, etc.  When the young bad guys were caught, it felt like real justice.

I always thought the “2nd cousin” to a show about team of former law enforcement officials and bounty hunters in their 60s and 70s who go under cover to bust these grifters was something about out-of-control seniors.  A follow-doc in the world of “Intervention,” where the more rational, next of kin must put a stop to all of Grandma and Grandpa’s partying and screwing (rates of sexually transmitted diseases have doubled among 50- to 90-year-olds in the past decade).

This article explores the increase in crime COMMITTED BY seniors.  It’s a sad, global trend and seems to be fueled by both greed and the harsh economics of retirement.

It feels abstract now, but check back in thirty years, and if our social security net is floundering, you may find members of Gen-X watching re-runs in a nursing home, trying to recall where they stashed a cache of drugs and weapons.
